Senki Japanese Restaurant
Monday, September 16, 2013 @ 4:31 PM ✈

Had a buffet dinner with the family last week at Senki Japanese Restaurant after doing some research and reading many reviews on many many restaurants. Since I was at home everyday, I was tasked to "provide suggestions" for dinner places during our family outing last weekend. I really have that much free time to read all sorts of reviews, and now I have made a long long list of restaurants to visit. >< It is said that Senki is among the top 3 best Japanese buffet in Singapore, along with Ikoi and Irodori. Best to make reservations before heading there so there's no need to queue, especially for weekends.

Located opposite the Singtel building, it's only a 300m walk from Somerset MRT. Senki features an ala-carte buffet, with over a hundred items on the menu which includes: appetizer, salad, sashimi, nigiri sushi, maki mono, temaki (hand roll), yakimono (grilled dishes), itamemono (pan fried dishes), agemono (deep fried dishes), menrui (noodles), owanmono (soup) and gohanmono (rice).

Do note that drinks are not included in the buffet, which means you have to add additional costs to order drinks. Hot green tea is refillable but I'm not sure about the other drinks.

Even before we ordered anything, we were served a complimentary salmon head. I must say I was skeptical to try it at first cause of the looks, but my family were full of praises for it so I finally decided to try it. The fish was really soft but there were many bones, and the gravy was......DAEBAK. Sweet, salty yet not to overwhelming, we finished this dish in no time and found ourselves searching the menu to order more of it. It's a pity that this dish wasn't included in the menu.

We ordered hiyayakko (chilled beancurd) and chuka lidako (seasoned baby octopus) from the appetizer page where the former tasted like an average tofu dish and the latter received thumbs up from 4 among the 5 of us.

This is probably the highlight of the night since we can order as much sashimi as we like. Tuna, Octopus and Salmon - they were really generous with the sashimi! Just look at how thick the salmon is! We wiped out the sashimi within 10 minutes and I even ordered another set of salmon sashimi for myself again, and I was served with 15 thick pieces on another plate. (seriously I almost died eating so much)

Amongst the sushi/maki selections available,we tried the Ebikko sushi, Spider Karashi (softshell crab with spicy sauce) and Spider temaki. Spider temaki was rather disappointing as they gave so little softshell crab I couldn't even taste it. -.- However, for the Spider Karashi there was quite a lot of softshell crab wrapped within. Topped with spicy sauce, it was a good combination plus the sushi wasn't too dry and spicy for me.

From the pan fried dish selection - Enoki Maki (Golden mushroom rolled with pork belly). Disappointing dish as the pork belly was way too hard. For the grilled dishes we had lady finger + eggplant (for my mum who loves them) and yakitori. The meat was tender, the sauce was sweet, though it seemed like an average yakitori I get from a Tori-Q bento.

Assorted tempura vegetables, sweet potato and assorted tempura prawn/vege. The deep fried dishes were served with a dipping sauce shown in the second photo above. I have no idea if it was supposed to be a sweet sauce or anything else, cause it was totally tasteless -.- the dishes tasted better without it. For the rice dishes my brother and dad had the unagi yaki meshi (fried rice with celery) and tori katsu karee (chicken cutlet curry rice).

Overall I don't really believe that their food standard should be considered among the top 3 best Japanese buffet restaurants in Singapore. Perhaps their standard has dropped or maybe perhaps because we didn't order the correct dishes as amongst all the food we had there were only a few dishes that were delicious. In future when I do my research on restaurants I must also take note of the dishes that are recommended and also the dishes that fall under "please don't bother trying" categories.
